Special Machines

In view of the required piece numbers, the machine classes previously introduced can be manufactured in volume. Specialized machine configurations (for example, two-dimensional machines for measuring profiles and flat parts) can be derived from these lines for restricted applications (see pp. 93 ff.).

In addition, special machines optimally suited to certain requirements such as the rapid measurement of tools (Fig. 33), measurement of recirculating ball screws with a length of 6.4 m (Fig. 34) or measurement of turbine blades with lengths of up to 2.5 m, can also be manufactured using mass-produced components.

Modern linear drives optimize the measuring speed. Using such drive systems, acceleration values of 10 m/s2 (approx. 1 g) can be reached within the coordinate measuring machine while at the same time attaining measuring uncertainties comparable to those offered by standard machines. This enables positioning to and measuring of several workpiece features per second.
